Organic Vineyard Country Estate, Tramuntana, Mallorca, Spain

A 50,000 m2 estate nestled at the base of the Tramontana mountains, which contained an organic vineyard, farm and a 5,600 m2 open field. The client requested that the open field be converted into several new garden rooms. An accessory road divides the new garden from the vineyard which needed to be united with the new gardens without dominating the area.

With a large extended family, the area closest to the home was designed to be an entertaining garden and lounge space with an infinity pool. Local mares stone was designed in a custom banded pattern to pay tribute to some of the formal elements of the home. Reclaimed stone from the site was used for the walls of the terrace connecting the upper terrace from the lower pool deck. Bamboo decking was chosen for its sustainability and natural finish which also conceals all pool equipment underground. Moving outward, a labyrinth of ornamental grasses allows one to weave their way into the dry Mediterranean gravel garden with olive trees, native shrubs and a mix of cloud-like perennials requiring minimal water. Here one can sit under the shade of olive trees and admire the vineyard. Beyond the dry garden, raised vegetable beds surrounded by an orchard allow for food production. Finally, a small section of space was left at the back to allow the owner to experiment with new wine varietals. Olive, cypress, and pine trees create a vertical plane that blends the stunning backdrop of the surrounding mountains.
